Chapter Seven

As Christmas inched closer, I felt guiltier and guiltier for thinking Christopher was having an affair. He was nothing but sweet and attentive and the great husband he had always been to me. We had a wonderful visit with his parents, during which they showered Colin with affection and gifts. I was sad to see them go at the end of the weekend. They did help us tremendously, letting Christopher and me have a whole day to ourselves to get the couples massage, Christmas shop together, and even have a romantic dinner. Their visit left me feeling energized, and even Carolyn noticed the change in me.

“I can’t even tell you how happy I am things are back to normal,” she said the Wednesday before Christmas. We were having a productive afternoon of gift wrapping, both for our personal families and also for the toy drive I had volunteered for at Colin’s school. Families had brought in gifts to donate to charity the past two weeks. The presents would be given to families in need so their children weren’t without on Christmas. It was one of my favorite events to participate in during the holiday season. I hated the thought of any child not having a toy or two under the tree on Christmas morning.

“Man, same here. But I feel like the guilt is going to eat me alive one of these days,” I said, making a crisp corner and folding the wrapping paper around a Barbie doll, one that looked much more realistic than the Barbies I remembered seeing years ago.

“You are going to talk to him about everything, right?” she questioned, grabbing a Hot Wheels race set and another roll of wrapping paper.

“Yep, after Christmas. I didn’t want anything to ruin the holiday. I don’t know how he’ll react. What if this really upsets him? I mean, it’s not like I took it far or anything. I didn’t tell people—besides you. I didn’t try to hurt him. I didn’t even spy on him, really. I mean, opening the credit card statement was totally innocent. I didn’t know what I was going to find. But I still feel like a mega-paranoid wife. And a huge dummy on top of it.”

“Don’t even stress about it. Honestly, I’m sure Christopher will understand. And like you said, it’s not like you did anything wrong but have feelings. He can’t hold that against you.”

“True.” I used a pink bow to wrap around the Barbie and set it next to our already-impressive pile of gifts. “So tell me, when do you think you’ll be a grandmother?”

“Wash your mouth!” Carolyn shrieked, dropping the gift and placing a hand on her heart in dramatics. “That’s a naughty word!”

“What is?” I teased her. “Grandmother? Grandma? Grams?”

“Stop it!” Covering her ears, she shook her head back and forth. “I’m too young to be a grandma!”

“While that is true, doesn’t Claudia want kids soon? She always talks about them.”

“She does have baby fever,” Carolyn confirmed, getting back to wrapping. “It sounds so bizarre that my baby wants to have a baby.
